Multi-kulti

Sunday, September 24th, 2000

Södermalm has become extremely trendy. Some days it gets to me – but I don’t feel like complaining about gentrification today. I was born in this part of town and it still feels good.

What to do? Buy a new hat…

check out the skateboarders, visit the mosque

or have a kebab?

Very old trees in this garden…

music is played here…

and this is where Aila lives!

Taxi through the sun

The light was still good – I took a taxi home to Södermalm.

Urban paradise (a k a home)

I rest on my balcony. It’s very quiet – I count my blessings.

I go for a walk. Stockholm (in particular Södermalm) goes from old to new and back all the time.

15th century IT

Sunday, September 24th, 2000

Walking between medieval buildings…

IT-palace:
I come to this small 15th century palace.

The guard is armed and careful because…

the Royal Castle is just across the street.

But with a key to this backdoor…

IT-palaceInterior1:
it’s soon business as usual.

The Swedish Parliament turned this 15th century palace into an IT-lab, but the archeologists had to finish first. Many things are well preserved.

It was a busy day, so even though the Old Town is full of amazing restaurants the developers had some kebab.

To the Old Town

Saturday, September 23rd, 2000

I hit the streets of Södermalm.

Not very mean streets today: local police and local drunks are having a friendly chat.

The subway…

takes me to the Old Town.

Cold lake swim

Hot sauna, cold lake…

Afterwards, we are hungry.

Wet towels on the balcony.

Evening sauna

Saturday, September 23rd, 2000

Just outside central Stockholm…

less than 15 minutes away: Hellasgården.

Some people come here to run in the woods.

But we head straight for the sauna.

Sauna is a ritual – we wouldn’t dream of disturbing anyone by taking pictures. But this is what Aila thinks we look like:

My girlfriend is a good painter. She was born in the north of Finland (maybe that’s why this years Christmas’s cards look like this):
