Night bombings

Thursday, March 20th, 2003

Another good day yesterday: early swimming, then hacking all day. I ate fruit and drank water, had sashimi for dinner and kept working.

I didn’t get home till about 2 AM, however, and found myself waiting for the war to start. Which it did. Some of the media circus was sad: tabloid scrambling for war headlines, copy-and-pasted news bureau rewrites etc. But Swedish media in general are cautious, not flat against the war but wary of being cheer leaders for Bush and looking for different angles.

My current RSS feeds include everything from AP and Reuters to web pundits and diaries from Bagdad. Everything is usually updated within the hour - but actually reading and making any sense of it is something else. Information war is reaching new levels, too, with lots of obvious (and not so obvious) disinformation floating around.

I’m off for lunch with a friend and then some work. Later…

My friend was in good shape: soon to be a member of The Swedish Bar Association and happy with his new girlfriend. He is a tough lawyer, a true gentleman and a free spirit who enjoys “theorizing with a heart”. Sound like a recipe for good discusssions, n’ est pas?

Before the war

Wednesday, March 19th, 2003

They are building a new railroad bridge close to where I live. I hear the occasional explosion and not much else. But most mornings I wake up at six from the vibrations when they turn on this huge construction machine.

I used to worry about it. But now I either go back to sleep or go swimming - and today is another swimming day.

Training around recent injuries (a fractured rib, a sprained ankle etc) has been interesting: swimming very slow or not at all, focusing intensely on the correct movements despite pain. Now that I can really stretch out again I enjoy every lap.

Yesterday I had a great day at work: a little crew of developers working in sync on interesting things, on schedule and without distractions. Lots of hard work made it possible to relax and have fun for a while.

Before I fill my water bottles and leave today, I’ll do a quick RSS news feeds using Syndirella. No time to write any comments this morning, but from a distance I feel the pulse of the world.

The sun just came up outside - time to go! I am very grateful for being allowed to live this life in peace.

Spring speedup

Tuesday, March 18th, 2003

Just a quick note to let everyone know I’m around.

It’s very early morning, I’m off for some swimming before work. Spring is mild but definitely here.

Work is fun again, despite stressful conditions. We’re building a distributed app in C#, with Pocket PC clients. I am system architect, works with the customer on use cases and data modeling… and writes lots of code.

Me and Aila broke up after last summer. We remain friends but don’t see each other as often. She has things to do that she needs to do by herself. I fell in love with someone else (but that didn’t work out). I still think and feel about these things - but not obsessively.

Anyway… later.
