Midsummer

Tuesday, June 25th, 2002

I spent midsummer with my family at Landsort, in the Stockholm archipelago. An awesome place… as usual, Aila took amazing pictures.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t really relax and let go of work. I recently wrote a piece of code not up to my own standards - now I spent many hours cleaning up the code while my family relaxed.

No one told me to do it. But I was angry at myself for not refusing to solve a particular problem with quick-n-dirty hacking. I knew at once that would be counter-productive and said so, but was explicitly ordered to work fast&loose. It was completely unexpected - this is a project with a stated ambition of doing things right (talk to users, discuss design with others, write unit-tests etc). Most of that good stuff hasn’t happened yet, though… so maybe this really is the shape of things to come?

Anyway… I wrote some unit tests and refactored until I had halfway decent code. We’ll see what happens.

Summer goes on… I’ll spend a week at ZengĂ„rden, work two more weeks and then spend two weeks in a small Spanish village by the sea with Aila. For several reasons, we really need some time for ourselves.

Summer is here - where am I?

It’s very hot. I’m working in a downtown office with no aircondition and open windows. I’m still very allergic.

Soon I’ll take a week off and go up to ZengĂ„rden. I look forward to sitting with other people again.
