Sunday diversion

Sunday, April 28th, 2002

The world of chess is not too far from boxing these days: different world champions belonging to different organizations and spectacular games sponsored by arabian sheiks.

And computer chess is a spectator sport these days - only grand masters have a chance against the best software. So I rediscovered Go.

Saturday idling

Saturday, April 27th, 2002

My favorite swimming-pool was closed to the public today, so I did Nautilus machines and climbers instead. That’s fun once in a while - but I’d get very bored doing it all the time.

In the afternoon I had an excellent cup of arabian coffee at the mosque.

Offline writing

Friday, April 26th, 2002

It’s now early morning. I have a small deadline today and write offline, in Swedish. Once that is done I’ll start moving things back on the Web - I have far too much unused server space.

Google:s SOAP API is certainly fun to with! But it has also triggered an intense debate: why SOAP? Is it actually an unnecessary layer, some kind of trojan horse to turn the Web over to MS and IBM? Some clueful people apparently think so. And others don’t.There is a nice summary on Advogato

Finished writing, had some breakfast and went swimming… a great way to start the day!

Pollen time

Wednesday, April 24th, 2002

Working at home, staying indoors to avoid the pollen. Did some early morning swimming again - I’m really getting into it now.

At my current major project, the Military can’t find somewhere to house us at the HQ and won’t let us rent an external place without miles of red tape. Never mind - I keep doing lowlevel technical research (today it’s blobs and stored procedures in DB2) and wait it out.

Also, I just started to write some newsletters for my company. And they don’t mind if it’s a weblog! Getting paid to do that kind of work seems like a dream - maybe that’s why it’s been so hard to get started. Also, I have an unfortunate tendency to go off investigating tools and meta-solutions instead of just writing…
I hope to post that stuff eventually. But right now it’s in Swedish. We’ll see.

XP workshop

Monday, April 15th, 2002

I’m organizing an XP workshop at my company. I’m aiming for something very hands-on: do things first, discuss later. Also, we’re trying to find a teacher with experience from real projects - tomorrow, we’ll interview someone promising. Naturally, we’ll use Python.
