Vacation revisited

Thursday, July 19th, 2001

OK… breathe out. Relax. Etc. Work is done for now.

The doctor I visited today said my ears and lungs are OK and the bacteria are gone – but the virus I also had is still there. There was nothing he could do except tell me to rest. And I will.

My Thinkpad is on vacation, too – the screen went bad so I left it for service today.

Me and Aila will leave town sometime tomorrow.

Trying to rest

Wednesday, July 18th, 2001

Me and Aila just spent 24 hours resting at Rosenön, a very quiet conference center on a small island outside Stockholm. My parents invited us out for lunch and when they saw we liked it, they told us to stay overnight if we wanted to. Thank you!

The unexpected business from Monday is almost taken care of – I spent several hours after I came home today working on it and will wrap it up tomorrow. It had to be done, I guess.

Brief business interlude

Monday, July 16th, 2001

Back in town after a week on the extremely beautiful Swedish island Gotland.

Aila went to her Shiatsu course – I was still too feverish to participate but rested in the beautiful little cottage she had rented nearby. Later this weekend I was feeling somewhat better and we drove all over the island in our rented car. What a fantastic way to spend a week!

Unfortunately, there was one unexpected and unpleasant business mail waiting for me early today. It was very stressful, but now I have done almost everything I can do about it – let’s hope the rest will sort itself out soon.

Summer rain

Tuesday, July 10th, 2001

A cool rain keeps falling and falling, I hear distant thunder… feel a weight being lifted… breathe a little more freely again.

Fever meets a cool breeze on my brow.

Life is good!

I’m leaving for Gotland right now – why not? I’ll probably be offline until Sunday. Take care, everyone!

Summer fever

Monday, July 9th, 2001

Waiting, slowly sweating… it could be better, it could be much worse. Reading is slow, writing is slow – but that’s OK, too.

Dan Gillmor talks about the need for time to reflect – I couldn’t agree more.

Hal is very busy these days. Lots of luck with the thesis! And may your unborn child unfold into another beautiful being.

No country

Sunday, July 8th, 2001

Never got to the country yesterday – got ill and had to stay home. A quick visit to the doctor confirmed some kind of streps, so I’m now on antibiotics.

Aila left for Gotland today, for a master class with some of the best shiatsu therapists in Sweden. I’ll join her there Tuesday, if I am well enough by then.

I am not qualified to attend the shiatsu class, of course (it’s strictly for experienced practitioners). But I will do qigong and meditation with them – and I am usually a good guinea pig, if they need one.

Off to the country

Saturday, July 7th, 2001

But just over the weekend – I’ll see if I can post from there.

Allergy rules

Friday, July 6th, 2001
  1. Don’t be allergic
  2. If rule 1 can’t be followed, stay away from grass
  3. If rule 2 can’t be followed, keep indoors
  4. If rule 3 can’t be followed, suffer and repent

I followed the rules last year, too.

Note to all my non-technical friends: don’t upgrade to Windows XP unless you absolutely have to. Microsoft has very little good to offer this time and quite a few nasty surprises.

Walt Mossberg: “If you’re one of the millions of consumers with multiple PCs in your household, and you plan on upgrading them to Microsoft’s forthcoming Windows XP operating system, you’re in for a rude surprise.” Via Scripting News

Everyone, me included, now seems to be seriously worried about Microsoft’s recent powergrabs. Cam has a few relevant links.

Dave Winer’s historic comparison with IBM in the Eighties is interesting, though: at the time IBM were the Evil Empire and it looked as though nothing would stop them from ruling the world. But then came the days of the PC… IBM didn’t accept the market’s urge for the new thing and it took them years to recover.

I think Douglas Rushkoff has it right:

The Internet is back.

The money people have left – they’ll soon find something new to abuse. Meanwhile, those of us who love the Web are still here, doing things we love and writing about it.

Have a nice weekend!

Fan of Opera?

Thursday, July 5th, 2001

Hmmm… I’ve been unable to update this site for several days now. Normally I use Opera, but today I tried IE Explorer – and it worked. I thought Dave Winer was a fan of Opera these days?

Apart from this I still enjoy Opera a lot and have very few problems otherwise – that’s why this took me so long to find.’

Back in town.
