Hot september

Saturday, September 30th, 2000

I went running, and discovered it was hot today. Just a little wind, lots of sun and almost no clouds. Spectactular!

Running right across the street, I heard a band soundcheck in the park, saw a train come out of the tunnel and found my step up and down the first hills. Keeping my pulse slow, I ran past a field where 10 year old soccer-players trained for Hammarby, pride of Södermalm. Feeling very relaxed I reached the waterside. Everyone was out: young girls having noisy picknics, old couples enjoying the sun, runners running and dogs playing. Some boats were heading out towards the archipelago (the sound of their motors carried well across the water), while others were hauled out of the water by a giant crane and prepared for winter storage. The season is ending, and it’s ending well.

Afterwards I had some crispbread with shrimps and drank lots of water.

Dinner time: Aila is working, so I am going to some friends who promised me lots of fresh corn.

Right there

Back in the water today, and my swimming went well. Afterwards, I went to a very small Italian restaurant called Zucchero and ate a light but excellent meal. It was a warm day again, so I had my coffe outside and watched the late afternoon sun above the rooftops of Södermalm.

Aila was working at the annual Health Fair - I left a message on her phone, telling her how beautiful everything was.

Close to the surface

Tomorrow I’ll answer some very nice mail I have received recently. But today I felt fragile and asocial, so I stayed low: no meetings, no cell phone, no mail.

I met Aila for dinner, we went to Little Persia and ate delicious Persian food. She is working a lot these days - it’s no surprise to me that her shiatsu practice is going well.

My cold is almost gone now, but tonight I will try to sleep early.

Boning up

I had a good day at the Palace today, everyone seems to feel good about working right now. But I think it will get even better. And I just got the go-ahead to spend more time on research again.

I am on the verge of having absorbed a lot of new material - but I’m not quite there yet. And tonight I am tired: my cold is not quite gone yet, so I have very little energy.

There is so much work to do now, work that I really want to do.

Late flip

Tuesday, September 26th, 2000

I still have a lingering cold: I could work, but when I came home I fell asleep at once - and woke up for another “late-flip day”.

I got to see the results of some fairly recent work today: the first hundred of this season’s political proposals to the Swedish Paliament have turned into XML-documents and can now be used in the tracking and planning of the political process. The whole process is very smooth, so far. There was one small but annoying bug in the export script - but we tracked it down and had just enough time to fix the first documents before they entered the planning system.

Alwin got burned picking the worse of two ways to mix meat and hot oil. I’m glad to hear it didn’t turn out worse!

We didn’t get to see behind the curtain of Booknotes - Craig tells us why and shares some lessons. See you next time!

And Hal is getting into dialectics of subcultural expression. And pointed at Graphics and Web Design Based on Edward Tufte’s Principles.

Backupbrain posted My thoughts on Fray day 4. Hmmm… gave me something to think about.

It’s early evening, I’m still at work. Almost everyone has left our little palace. I’m refactoring some report code, thinking about a cleaner way to generate xml from existing object-structures.

So many people, so many pictures

Sunday, September 24th, 2000

Looks like everyone has been working really hard. And Garrret found out at midnight he needed to sleep. Wonder why?

So the BTC gallery will open later today (sometime late Sunday evening, Swedish time). Update: the gallery is now open!

But enough about the future. Right now it’s Sunday afternoon in Sweden, the sun is shining and I’m going out to play.

On my way out, just a quick pointer to Greg Franklin’s take on XML and the samurai spirit. The analogy may seem wild - but he makes his point using The taming of the samurai, which is a solid and very interesting book. Recommended for the thoughtful would-be samurai

Multi-kulti

Sunday, September 24th, 2000

Södermalm has become extremely trendy. Some days it gets to me - but I don’t feel like complaining about gentrification today. I was born in this part of town and it still feels good.

What to do? Buy a new hat…

check out the skateboarders, visit the mosque

or have a kebab?

Very old trees in this garden…

music is played here…

and this is where Aila lives!

Taxi through the sun

The light was still good - I took a taxi home to Södermalm.

Urban paradise (a k a home)

I rest on my balcony. It’s very quiet - I count my blessings.

I go for a walk. Stockholm (in particular Södermalm) goes from old to new and back all the time.

15th century IT

Sunday, September 24th, 2000

Walking between medieval buildings…

IT-palace:
I come to this small 15th century palace.

The guard is armed and careful because…

the Royal Castle is just across the street.

But with a key to this backdoor…

IT-palaceInterior1:
it’s soon business as usual.

The Swedish Parliament turned this 15th century palace into an IT-lab, but the archeologists had to finish first. Many things are well preserved.

It was a busy day, so even though the Old Town is full of amazing restaurants the developers had some kebab.
